St. David's Foundation:
Research & Insights Microsite

St. David's Foundation invests heavily in the Central Texas community, and is constantly measuring the success of their initiatives.  The Foundation needed a self-sustaining, author-friendly platform to share the valuable research and insights these studies produce.

Their primary website had been created by another developer, so we built the Research and Learning site as a wholly independent Wordpress install. The header and footer exactly mimics their main site, which now includes a navigation tab back to the subdomain: learning.stdavidsfoundation.org.

We documented the build in a comprehensive and clearly-written site guide, empowering St. David's Program Officers and communications staff to easily draft and publish new articles without additional development costs.

St. David's FoundatioN: Toast of the Town

Website • Live Stream Engine • Creative Direction • Content Production

A thirty-years-running tradition in Austin philanthropy, Toast of the Town is an annual series of small-group parties where celebrated authors, musicians, and academics mingle with donors and hosts in private homes across the city. It's an intimate, up-close experience, and it's the antithesis of Zoom.

Asked initially to create a microsite promoting 2021's Covid-safe, online-only series, we soon found ourselves building the very platform on which the Toast of the Town virtual events would run, and serving as Creative Director for the thirteen-part series.

It was easy to assemble a list of everything people didn't like about online fundraisers they'd attended: with gimmicky features meant to mimic the gala experience, the go-to off-the-shelf platforms somehow managed to amplify the isolated, at-home reality. So, inspired by the 2021 Inauguration Day livestream, we set out to create an experience that could be shared by small groups of friends, without huddling around a laptop or being tethered to their mobile devices. We wanted these parties to be on the big screen.

With special guests like Clint Black, Kathy Valentine, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Nancy Wilson, and H.W. Brands, all thirteen of the Toast of the Town events streamed live on our FLOW STUDIOS custom TV app, which guests downloaded in advance to their Apple TV, Fire Stick, and Roku devices. Using their phone or laptop, guests could check in with each other on a custom page with features like a dynamically updating gallery of photos, a text chat, and an invitation to join the stream in a one-on-one video Q&A. The series was a huge success, raising record donations and attracting talent who would have otherwise been out of reach in an in-person format.

TEXAS OBSERVER: 2021 MOLLY AWARDS

Website • Live Stream Engine • Creative Direction • Content Production

Investigative news outlet The Texas Observer is a nonprofit newsroom with deep roots in progressive Texas journalism. Legendary columnist Molly Ivins served as co-editor of the magazine in the 1970s, and the publication now honors her memory with an eponymously named awards show. The annual event is central to the organization's fundraising strategy, so it was critical that in the absence of a live event, they offer prospective donors a rich virtual experience.

We anchored the show with a series of pre-taped roundtable discussions with writers and editors from the Observer. Shouting out donations in real-time and presenting awards to honorees who joined remotely, Becky Bullard and Ashley Cheng co-hosted the show live from our South Congress studio in Austin.

Transgender Activist and Educator Aydian Dowling

With a breakthrough cover feature in Men’s Health magazine and multiple appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Aydian Dowling is a household name in the transgender community.

His strong social media channels keep him connected with his community, but aren't an effective way to reach prospective clients for his speaking and consulting services. Aydian had been playing with some website builder platforms on his own, ultimately asking us for a fresh perspective.

In workshops with Aydian, we determined that rather than try to be all things to all visitors, aydiandowling.com would speak primarily to a business audience. We imagined a fictional (but very specific) prospect: a progressive young Trans ally working at the Director-level in a corporate environment, tasked with recruiting a Trans voice for a diversity initiative. They've heard of Aydian and may even follow him on social, but need something concrete to put in front of the VP who'll ultimately make the decision.

We made all our design and content decisions from this visitor's perspective, creating a site that would inspire confidence in recommending Aydian, and a strong tool to get buy-in from a slightly more conservative executive team. Knowing this person would likely be visiting from a laptop on a strong network, we traded a slightly faster page load time in favor of a visually rich, one page sell sheet with credentials, testimonials, client logos, and videos.

St. David's Foundation:
Healthy Smiles Contest Site

The St. David’s Foundation Dental Program operates a fleet of mobile dental clinics, working with local schools to deliver free dental care to underserved children in Central Texas.

We built this bilingual microsite as the contest home for a Dental Health Month initiative promoting preventive care. As kids uploaded their video submissions, our automated backend processed the entries, presenting them back to the dental team in a clean, user-friendly database with video transcripts, user info, and a rating system that tracked their favorite entries.
